About Bangs Circular

The Tiwai Honey Initiative under Bangs Circular is a youth-led environmental conservation and restoration project rooted in the heart of Tiwai Island, Boma, one of the communities neighbouring the Tiwai Island Wildlife Sanctuary in Sierra Leone.
Our mission is simple but powerful: to protect biodiversity, restore ecosystems, and create sustainable income through beekeeping and conservation education.
For founder Aruna Bangura, this mission is deeply personal.
His natural environment shaped Aruna’s upbringing in Boma. His parents upheld a beekeeping tradition that not only provided for their family but also connected them with the cycles of the forest. Over time, however, he noticed a decline. The forest seemed less alive, and the bee population dwindled. Near Tiwai Island, logging, deforestation, and poaching became prevalent as communities struggled with scarce resources.
Years later, while studying conservation and conducting research in his home area, Aruna started to connect the dots. He discovered that bee populations were drastically declining, a global problem with local repercussions. Essential for maintaining healthy forests and food security, pollinators were disappearing. Without their presence, both the forest ecosystem and the people who relied on it faced significant risks.

Driven by the goal of reconnecting his community with nature and addressing the decline in bee population, Aruna launched the Tiwai Honey Initiative via Bangs Circular in 2023. This initiative revives contemporary beekeeping methods, offers training to local youth and women, and creates value-added honey products, such as Tiwai Honey. At the same time, it helps protect forest habitats and alleviates pressure on natural resources.

This initiative extends beyond a typical honey project. It aims to restore harmony between humanity and Nature, as well as between tradition and modernity. Mirroring the industrious nature of bees, Bangs Circular is steadily and quietly constructing a brighter, more resilient future, one hive at a time.
